Will There be a Season 2?

Will there be a season 2 for Mare of Easttown on HBO Max? Winslet, for one, is on board. “I would absolutely love to play Mare again,” she told TVLine during a post-finale interview. “I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role. There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”

Meanwhile, the show’s creator and head writer Brad Ingelsby was a little more circumspect as he talked about the possibility of more Mare. “Kate and I, if we could crack a story that we were really proud of and felt like it was a deserving second chapter in Mare’s journey, then maybe,” Ingelsby told The Hollywood Reporter. “I haven’t cracked that yet; I don’t know what that is, honestly.” And his hesitation is understandable: how many outstanding one-season shows have been tainted by a less-than-stellar, arguably unnecessary second season? HBO specifically has a track record in this area (sorry, Big Little Lies, we’re looking at you) so as much as we want more Mare, let’s hope it only happens if Winslet and Ingelsby find the right story.
