The junior barrister’s talent, peerless intellect and winning charm are in high demand, much to the aggravation of his courtroom rival, Maggie Gardner, a top prosecutor who finds herself constantly up against Will’s brilliance in court. Watch American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story on Prime Video
This docudrama dives into the story of Playboy magazine’s charismatic founder, Hugh Hefner, who created one of the world’s most recognizable brands. The series is a combination of interviews, archival footage (including moments found in Hefner’s vast personal collection) and cinematic re-enactments that cover the launch of the magazine as well as the next six decades of Hefner’s personal life and career. While building his empire, Hefner also devoted time to defending civil rights, freedom of speech and sexual freedom.
The Amazon Original Series draws from unprecedented access to more than 17,000 hours of footage and over 2,600 scrapbooks from Hefner’s personal archives, chronicling the life of an American icon and the history of the brand he created.
American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, the new 10-part docu-series on Amazon Prime, asks us to imagine its subject as the Don Draper of gentlemen’s magazines. From humble origins, Hefner ascends the hierarchy of mid-century media, aided by a potent alchemy of ambition and chiseled instinct. He is – for the most part – amoral, though not without specific convictions.
Stirred by Alfred Kinsey’s seismic 1948 report, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, he determined in his junior year of college that sexual taboos were not merely hypocritical, but fundamentally damaging. American popular culture trumpeted a “Norman Rockwell view of the world” that Hefner regarded as wholly fictitious. Accordingly, his paramount aim in founding Playboy was to introduce sexuality as a crucial and healthy topic for public discourse.

Apple Tree Yard on Prime Video
A provocative thriller which sees an eminent scientist caught up in a damaging and compromising lie. Based on the novel by Louise Doughty
Emily Watson plays a dangerous game with exceptional finesse in Apple Tree Yard, a rattlingly intense erotic thriller that deftly explores disturbing dilemmas and themes.
In Apple Tree Yard, Yvonne is treated, as she puts it, “as a collection of holes” by the man who rapes her. Unlike some TV drama, Apple Tree Yard only reaffirms her personhood. Not only does it present rape as unrelated to the narrative machinations of a cop drama or the gaudy controversy courted by high-stakes TV series, it also separates the actions of the victim from the linear narratives of the news and legal system. In a world where people are still holding television debates about whether women are responsible for provoking rapists by wearing short skirts, Apple Tree Yard isolates the horror of rape, and illuminates the surrounding irrelevance.
