Diagnosing Back Pain
Your doctor will examine your back and assess your ability to sit, stand, walk and lift your legs. Your doctor might also ask you to rate your pain on a scale of zero to 10 and talk to you about how well you’re functioning with your pain.
These assessments help determine where the pain comes from, how much you can move before pain forces you to stop and whether you have muscle spasms. They can also help rule out more-serious causes of back pain.
If there is reason to suspect that a specific condition is causing your back pain, your doctor might order one or more tests:
X-ray – These images show the alignment of your bones and whether you have arthritis or broken bones. These images alone won’t show problems with your spinal cord, muscles, nerves or disks.
MRI or CT scans – These scans generate images that can reveal herniated disks or problems with bones, muscles, tissue, tendons, nerves, ligaments and blood vessels.
Blood tests – These can help determine whether you have an infection or other condition that might be causing your pain.
Bone scan – In rare cases, your doctor might use a bone scan to look for bone tumors or compression fractures caused by osteoporosis.
Nerve studies – Electromyography (EMG) measures the electrical impulses produced by the nerves and the responses of your muscles. This test can confirm nerve compression caused by herniated disks or narrowing of your spinal canal (spinal stenosis).

Deep Tissue Massage For Back Pain Management
Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that’s mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. It involves applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues. This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue. It may also promote faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.
The most obvious and immediate benefit of a deep tissue massage is pain relief. As the skin is massaged, it slows the activity of inflammatory cytokines, which contribute to pain and inflammation. Additionally, massage helps increase the proteins that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, which helps muscles recover from injury and activity.
Accupuncture For Back Pain Management
In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is linked to the belief that disease is caused by disruptions to the flow of energy, or qi, in the body. Acupuncture stimulates points on or under the skin called acupuncture points or acupressure points, releasing this qi.
One major hypothesis is that acupuncture works through neurohormonal pathways. Basically, you put the needle through specific points in the body and stimulate the nerve. The nerve actually sends signals to the brain, and the brain releases neural hormones such as beta-Endorphins. By doing that, the patient may feel euphoric, or happy, and this increases the pain threshold and they feel less pain.
Another hypothesis is that acupuncture works by reducing pro-inflammatory markers, or proteins, in the body. Some animal and human studies suggest that by doing acupuncture, you can significantly decrease these pro-inflammatory markers — including TNF and IL-1β — which decreases inflammation and reduces pain.
Chiropractic Care For Back Pain Management
Chiropractic care addresses many common reasons why people experience pain and other health issues. If something is not right with your body’s foundation, than that needs to be addressed before true health can be achieved. With chiropractic care, your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care .
Phase 1: Relief Care
If you are in pain when you come into our San Carlos chiropractic office, our first objective is to help you reduce pain and start feeling better as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the underlying condition which is causing your pain, it is typical for a patient to need chiropractic care or adjustments 2-3 times per week for 4-12 weeks.
Phase 2: Corrective/Restorative Care
During the corrective phase of chiropractic care, muscles and other tissues are allowed to heal more completely, which helps prevent further injury or pain. The goal of corrective or restorative chiropractic care is to help bring your body back to 100% functioning. It is typical to need chiropractic care or adjustments about 4-8 times per month for 6-24 months, depending on your overall health and the severity of your problem.
Phase 3: Wellness Care
Once your body has fully healed and you are no longer experiencing back pain or other pain symptoms, it is important to come in for periodic chiropractic adjustments to avoid further problems in the future. Usually, this phase of chiropractic care only requires a quick visit to the chiropractor 1-4 times per month, based on your lifestyle and goals.
Hot Tubs For Back Pain Relief
One way you may be able to lessen the pain in your lower back is to start spending time in a hot tub. A hot tub’s combination of warmth, buoyancy, and massage jets can help muscles relax, providing temporary relief to back muscles. By taking short, regular soaks for about twenty minutes every day, you may be able to find the relief you’re looking for.
Hot tubs are ideal for back pain because: The warm, soothing water promotes optimal blood circulation, which aids the healing effort. Hydrotherapy (especially a hot tub soak for lower back pain) also diminishes the pain sensory signals sent from your back to the brain.
Heat – A hot tub’s warm waters will raise a person’s body temperature. This enhances circulation, improving blood flow and promoting relaxation. As muscles relax, tension and the pain that comes with it can lessen.
Buoyancy – While immersed neck deep in a hot tub’s soothing waters, a person’s experienced body weight is reduced by 90%. This takes the pressure off of bones, joints, and muscles, including those directly and indirectly associated with the lower back.
Massage – High-quality premium and luxury hot tubs use powerful jets to massage major muscle groups. This hydromassage kneads knots and tension out of muscles, helping them relax in the warm water and providing relief from over-tightness.
Sleep Number Beds For Back Pain Management
When we sleep on a traditional mattress, the area of our body that is touching the bed is often subjected to pressure from the weight of the rest of the body. The Zero Gravity setting can provide ultimate relaxation by allowing your body to float into a weightless position, alleviating pressure. From the Zero Gravity setting, you can make minor adjustments to the head and foot position to find your ideal comfort level. When sleeping in the zero gravity position your head is elevated which helps to open up any restricted airways. Reducing or even eliminating snoring can help you enter the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stage more often throughout the night. This leads to more restorative sleep for both you and your partner
