Bathing Bernese Mountain Dogs – What makes a Bernese Mountain Dog stunning is his attractive coat and gentle and calm personality.

It’s recommended that Bernese Mountain Dog’s be groomed with two bath sessions. The first one is for general cleaning to remove the dirt and grime. The second bath session targets the needs of your dog. It’s recommended to use a hypo-allergenic shampoo, followed by a medicated shampoo if your dog suffers from skin irritations or allergies. If your dog has normal skin and coat, he can be bathed using any shampoo for all types – we use Neutrogena body wash. It’s important to use conditioner for his coat after shampooing. The conditioner will help his coat hydrated especially during harsh weather conditions.

A Berner’s Coat – Your dog sheds all throughout the year. The heaviest shedding occurs during seasons of spring and fall. Using your hands, pull your dog’s hair apart. Then, brush from his skin out to his coat ends. From the base of his ears, comb your dog down to his front legs, and to his hindquarters. This will prevent the formation of mats all over his body.

Tips for Bathing Bernese Mountain Dogs

Use a Pin Brush – The use of the pin brush will help remove the dead hair on the surface. This will also give your Bernese Mountain Dog a fluffy appearance which is his trademark. Hold his tail and brush his hair straight to the floor so that the tangles will be removed, and a full plume will be produced. After doing this, see to it that the brush will be cleaned frequently. You can use a small comb to remove the hairs which are stuck between the pins of your brush.

Clean Ears – Wipe the inner surface of your dog’s ear entirely while holding his ear leather upright. Gently wipe also the area near his or her ear canal, and hold his or her ear up until the ear cleaner will evaporate.

Use a Hair Dryer – Brush your dog’s coat while drying it using a hairdryer. Make sure that you turn the dryer to low. Aside from drying your Berner’s coat, it restores its body and volume. If your Bernese Mountain Dog is not comfortable with the hair dryer, give your Berner a couple of treats to help turn bathing into a positive experience for him or her.

How Often to Bath – If you are wondering how often you should bathe your Berner, you should know that heavy coated dog breeds like a Bernese Mountain Dog should be bathed once every two to three months. This is because your Berner’s coat is naturally oily and repellent. Thus, your Berner does not tend to develop any odor. However, if your Bernese Mountain Dog gets stuck in the mud and is very playful, he or she may need to take a bath more frequently. A Berner’s coat must end up freshly smelling with no shedding hair.
